Scholarship Garden Plant Sale
September 14, 2019
8:30a - 1p
Family Garden Club
1852 Whispering Pines Circle
Our upcoming scholarship plant sale will be held on Saturday, September 14 at Paul’s garden located at 1852 Whispering Pines Circle in Englewood. The sale hours are from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm. This street is located off Englewood Road (highway 776) just next to the Lemon Bay Plaza (with the Big Lots store) and across from Englewood Isles. Signs will be on the road indicating where to turn.
Our master gardener, Jim Chandler, says most of the plants we offer for sale are grown in members’ back yards here or in or near Englewood. Many are propagated from cuttings or starts, but only a few from seed. So, if they will grow in the average person’s garden, they are accustomed to this climate zone and are easy to grow. This is helpful and unlike some of the big box retailers which may grow them in glass houses with maximum coddling often creating problems when they are transitioning to your garden.
A few examples of “easy to grow” plants we hope to re-introduce is Little Ruby, a fast-growing specimen almost iridescent on the bottom of the leaf and a deep purple on top. Then there is the Purple Porter Flower. Some gardeners call it a weed, and it is indeed a very hardy plant. Other standards for this part of the world are various Copper Leafs (not all are copper colored though), Wedding Bouquet Plumeria, and Starburst Clerodendron. We still have some Bamboo plants available as well. You might even find few Milk Weed plants for those hungry Monarchs.
Ask about our Vanilla Orchids which grow on most any tree. These plants are available at a premium price, but we will even share the secrets of producing Vanilla Extract from your plant.
Some other varieties that are available are as follows: Brazilian Red Cloak, Bromeliads, Cassia Bicapsularis, Cassia Alata (Candlestick), Fire Bush, Papyrus, Red & Purple Fire Spike, and Turk’s Cap.
Since we had to cancel the July plant sale, and because of the fantastic weather for our growing season, we have an over-abundance of certain plants. We want to share some of these with our customers. Therefore, with your purchase at this plant sale, you are invited to choose one FREE plant from our “Special Area” of selected varieties.
At the sale, if you have questions, please ask one of our knowledgeable members who will surely have the answer. All plants are locally grown with most started in the back yards of our members.
Proceeds from the plant sale will go to the Lemon Bay High School Scholarship Fund. In May 2019 we awarded two $1,000.00 scholarships at the awards ceremony. At the past twelve awards ceremonies the club has donated $25,000 by way of your purchases and generosity. We plan to hold several plant sales throughout the year. Please check our website for the future dates as they are planned.
