Our master gardener, Jim Chandler, took inventory recently and reports that we have a wide selection of easy to grow plants, suitable for this area, and ready for purchase and planting. We are introducing several new items at this sale as well as our popular stand-bys. Here is what we will have. Golden Hawaiian Bamboo, Yucca for accents in a desert garden, and variegated Bougainvillea (leaves are light green with white edges). Everybody needs Lucky Bamboo which will be available from $1 per stalk (it really is not bamboo). There are several Bridal Bouquet Plumeria with blooms which resemble the name of the plant. Fire Bush for the butterflies, along with many other such plants will be available. Also available will be Vanilla Orchids which thrive in the jungles of South & Central America and produce those seeds which end up as extract for baking. At this sale, one of our gardeners has produced some Angel Trumpet plants (this has bloomed four times this season). This is the Brugmansia variety, not the Datura which is the Devil’s Trumpet!
All plants are propagated and grown in members’ back yards. The value of locally grown plants is that they do not experience the shock of moving from a greenhouse to the conditions of an outdoor environment. Some of the varieties will be on a limited basis, so come early.
At the sale, if you have questions, please ask one of our knowledgeable members who will surely have the answer. All plants are locally grown with most started in the back yards of our members.
All proceeds from the sale will go to the Lemon Bay High School Scholarship Fund. This May we awarded two $2,000.00 scholarships at the awards ceremony. At the past eleven awards ceremonies the club has donated $23,000 by way of your purchases and generosity. This plant sale will be the last one held in 2018. Please check our website for the future dates as they are planned.
