Wayfaring Signage Designs
At the July 8th, 2010 CRA meeting, the LID update will include these images for discussion for wayfaring signage throughout the Central Business District. They are preliminary, but a starting point for discussion with the community for their input. You are encouraged to attend the presentation, so that you may hear an expanded design methodology, and participate in open discussion. As an alternate, the images are posted here for your perusal, and you are encouraged to pose questions and comments by email via this site.
Wayfaring signs direct travelers to points of interest in the Englewood Town Center, assisting visitors unfamiliar with Englewood in locating key facilities, points of interest, parking and services. They are viewed by motorists as well as pedestrians, so simplicity of design is key to quickly process its content. Color, key words, simple graphics and continuity of location all contribute to this goal. International symbols will illustrate key destinations, such as retail stores, restaurants and beauty shops, while text can specifically note community destinations such as parks, historical sites and parking.
The need for signage is immediate, as it has been cited consistently by residents and businesses. This consideration coupled with limited budget has led to a signage protocol that could be actualized now with the current Dearborn Streetscape and be expanded with the LID improvements later. Signs can be easily and inexpensively produced, installed on existing streetlights, and then later reused on new lights and bollards.
Shown here are preliminary images that illustrate an initial rationale for installation locations. Then, mock-ups of the two types of signage, graphic and text, are shown in detail. Lastly, a photo of an existing Dearborn Street light post is enhanced with the proposed signage to approximate visual reality.
The design team thanks you for your participation with the one way street layouts, every comment was considered and the design was adjusted based on your input. We look forward to a similarly lively and constructive community involvement in this evolvement of wayfaring signage in Olde Englewood Village.
