This live adaptation of L. Frank Baum's classic tale, which closely follows the 1939 MGM film of the same name, is based on the production presented by the Royal Shakespeare Company. The family show of The Wizard of Oz will follow Dorothy and Toto on their journey through Oz as she seeks her way her home and along the way learns to have heart, brains, courage thanks in part to her new friends: The Lion, Tin man, and Scarecrow. Lemon Bay’s production will have a modernized twist thanks complete with flying by the Las Vegas based Company, ZFX Flying Effects, and the influence of the more contemporary production of WICKED: The untold story of the witches of Oz. The breathtaking special effects will sweep audiences away from the moment the tornado twists its way into Kansas.
Known for providing professional and ‘deliberately dynamic” theatre, the award winning Lemon Bay High School Theatre will have quite a few surprises in store. Many of the shows characters will fly (literally), there will be cameo performances from community members, and special appearances by little Englewood “munchkins” straight from the Vineland Elementary music program.
Join Dorothy played by LBHS junior and Venice Little Theatre stage veteran Hailey Baillet, Toto, the Good Witch (Ashley Colbart) and their friends the Cowardly Lion (Ricky Pietz/Kyle Bass), Tin Man (David Skeehan/Matt Haines) and Scarecrow (Rob Wilson/Josh Joshson), as they are transported "Over the Rainbow" to adventures in Munchkin Land, the Haunted Forest, and the Emerald City to visit the great and powerful Oz (Cody Becker). The production will feature classic songs, as composed by Harold Arlen, Over the Rainbow, Ding Dong the Witch is Dead and If I Only Had a Brain, along with the beloved characters. The Wizard of Oz will have the entire family captivated as they travel down the yellow brick road for an unforgettable evening at the theater.
The Wizard of Oz is directed by award winning director Jennifer Kelly, (Aida, The Wedding Singer, Cats, Swing!, Thoroughly Modern Millie) who recently led Lemon Bay’s Thespians to the International Thespian Festival with their production of The Wedding Singer. She is joined by co-producer and founder of the Lemon Bay HS Theatre program, Sherie Ragan (currently of Edison State College, Charlotte), Choreographer Sarah Baer, (owner of AND 5678 Dance), and Vocal Directors, Alan Corey (imusicaldirector.com) and Nancy Turpin (West Coast Church.)
