OEVA Presents: Jazz in the Afternoon May 19th!

jazz-in-the-afternoon-sm

“Tall and tan and young and lovely, the girl from Englewood goes walking. And when she passes, each one she passes goes ah….”Englewood Jazz.”

When Antonio Carlos Jobim composed this song in Portuguese in 1962 he may have been watching the girl from Ipanema in Rio de Janeiro, but had he been in Florida it could as easily have been the girl from Englewood. You can almost see Stan Getz playing the saxophone on Englewood Beach while the sun is setting.

Jazz as a musical genre has always been hard to define. Jazz is a mixture of European, African and American music cultures. Jazz is liked by everyone…and jazz is coming to Englewood.
On Saturday, May 19th the first FREE jazz concert will be held on Dearborn Street in the park adjacent to Mango Bistro. The concert will take place from 4 to 6 PM with smooth jazz from “Swingtide Combo. This popular jazz group plays all the jazz standards and jazz classics as well as Latin sambas.

The concert is sponsored by OEVA, Key Agency and a number of merchants on Dearborn Street. OEVA, who also organized this program, said the goal of the free concert is to encourage Englewood residents and people from surrounding areas, to come to Dearborn Street and enjoy quality entertainment and discover the shops and restaurants. Like the Farmer’s Market, OEVA hopes that this type of even will bring the community together.

If this event is successful, OEVA plans on presenting more “free music in the afternoon concerts” with a variety of music themes. So mark your calendars Englewood, and come down to Dearborn for some cool Jazz. Bring a chair or a blanket, but no coolers please.
