Jimi is known for his hot guitar work in the hit song "PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC."

The award winning Lemon Bay High School Theatre Department has hit the ground running for yet another great year of performances. With high hopes and great aspirations for this new school year, the students are hard at work on their first big production of the year.

To kick things off in a big way, the department is hosting the second annual ENGLEWOOD IDOL Competition in conjunction with the Englewood Pioneer Days Celebration. The talent filled, dazzling event will be “the place to be” on Thursday, September 2nd at 7 PM at the Lemon Bay High School Performing Art Center, and promises to entertain as the area’s finest vocalists show off their vocal prowess and battle it out for the crown.

The Cardboard Boat Race is always a popular, creative and funfilled contest!

The Englewood Jaycees' Captain Rick's Cardboard Boad Race will be held at Indian Mound Park.
Kid's Entries sponsored by Lasbury-Tracy Realty Inc. and Artists Acres.

Proceeds to benefit Kid's Needs of Englewood.

Registration begins at 9:00 AM - Race begins at 10:00 AM

Entry Categories:

• Little Sailors: 14 and under (must have parent's consent)
• Open Class Sailors: (15 & over, 15-18 must have parent's consent)
• New Family Class: Mom, Dad & the Kids ($30 Entry)
• Business Sponsored Boats in any Class ($30 Entry)

Cardboard boats are fairly easy to build and the material costs are very low if you use a few tricks of the trade. The primary focus is to have fun and hopefully end up building something out of cardboard that will float long enough to compete in a couple of heats, and still float to the finish line. Good luck!

Pioneer Days are fast approaching and a few of the old time traditions are being revived this year.fishing

In addition to the Labor Day Parade and block party, I am excited to be part of the Pioneer Days – Michael O’Donnell Memorial Fish-A-Thon. The greatest memory a parent can have is fishing with their child and watching the excitement on their faces as they reel in the “Big” fish. Fishing is a shared experience for the child as well as their adult fishing buddy. My family has taken on this part of the Pioneer Day tradition in honor of our son, brother and friend. My son, Michael, lost his life June 18, 2010 while spear fishing with his twin brother out at Boca Grande.

Fishing has been a part of my three boys’ lives from early on and into their adulthood. Michael always loved to have company visit and take them out fishing. He was known as “Captain Snookilla” and would always ensure a great time was had by all. Each trip was an adventure with pictures to prove it. (Fish stories were never accepted)

The fish-a-thon will be Sunday, September 5, 2010, during the Englewood Pioneer Day festivities on Labor Day weekend. It will be held at the Tom Adams Fishing Pier – its traditional location.  This Fish-A-Thon will be for kids 12 and under.

Children who register before August 26th will receive a free T-Shirt. Registrations should be mailed to: Roger & Cathy Redman - 15409 Avery Road, Port Charlotte, FL  33981.  Children will also be able to register the day of the event, but will not receive a T-Shirt unless they pre-register.

In September, Lemon Bay Playhouse will begin its 24th season of providing live theater for Englewood and the surrounding area. Well-known for its professional quality productions, the Playhouse season features a number of comedies and adds a touch of drama and mystery.

Trying, by Joanna McClelland Glass, opens the season, running from September 1 thru 19. It is a two-character play based on the author’s experience during 1967-1968 when she worked for Francis Biddle at his home in Washington, D.C. Judge Biddle had been Attorney General of the United States under Franklin Roosevelt. After the war, President Truman named him Chief Judge of the American Military Tribunal at Nuremberg.

The play is about a young Canadian girl and an old Philadelphia aristocrat, “trying” to understand each other in what Biddle knows is the final year of his life. “ ...portrait of generational reconciliation. It is enormously bracing theatre.” - New York Daily News
