What's Happening at the Elsie Quirk Library
Are you home doing homework and stuck on a question? Sarasota County Libraries offer Ask a Librarian a free online service that allows Floridians to chat live with a librarian for immediate assistance. A trained information professional can guide you to the answers you need in minutes, rather than your wasting hours navigating hundreds of unhelpful and irrelevant web sites. Librarians are available via live chat from 10 a.m. to midnight, Sunday through Thursday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Email assistance is available 24/7. To use the service go to www.sclibs.net and click on the Ask A Librarian icon on the main page. It’s easy, free, and fast!
Events for Grown-Ups
Join the Suncoast Writer’s Guild for Open Mic Poetry at 1:30 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room on Wednesday, March 10th. On Thursday, March 11th the Short Story Discussion Group will meet at 10 a.m. to discuss “Playing with Dynamite” by John Updike, and other excerpts and poems by the same author. Linda Masters will facilitate the discussion. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Elsie Quirk Library and all are welcome.
On Friday, March 12th educator Dan Duffy will conduct his Basic Conversational Spanish Class from 10:30 a.m. to noon. This class runs from January 8th through April 24th and is free of charge.
The Great Decisions Discussion Group meets on Monday, March 15th from 10 a.m. to noon. The topic this week will be the Persian Gulf and the discussion will be led by Paul Hyatt.
The Master Gardener’s from the Cooperative Extension Service will be here on Tuesday, March 16th from 10 a.m. to noon to answer your Florida gardening and landscaping questions. Consult an expert free of charge! Soil and irrigation water testing are also available for a small fee. At 1 p.m. the Englewood Camera Club meets in the upstairs meeting room.
Events for Kids, Tweens, and Teens.
On Wednesday, March 10th at 11 a.m., children ages 3 to 5 years old are invited to attend Preschool Story Time. This program provides an opportunity to develop and reinforce reading skills, language development, letter knowledge and comprehension. Kids will participate in reading aloud, rhymes, music, creative dramatics and crafts. The theme this week is “Rainy Stories.”
Join the fun at Toddler Time on Thursday, March 11th at 11 a.m. in the Youth Program Room. This program provides an introduction to early literacy skills including book sharing, simple concepts, and language development. Themes are related to experiences familiar with toddlers and include reading aloud, music, movement, letter and shape recognition and playtime with educational toys. The theme this week is “Green All Around.”
Learn basic art techniques with certified art teacher Carolyn Johnston at “Art with Carolyn” on Saturday, March 13th at 10:30 a.m. The program this month will feature “Fabulous Flowers” and will feature the art work at Georgia O’Keefe. Registration is required and limited to 10 children. High School age students are invited to celebrate Teen Tech Week by attending a Video Workshop at 1:30 p.m. Participate in writing, taping, and editing a video. Videos will be posted on the website. Registration is limited and required.
The Forty Carrots Family Center will present a free “Partners in Play” program on Tuesday, March 16th at 10:15 a.m. Share meaningful play time with your child at this program that includes movement, art, singing, and educational toys. Space is limited to 10 families on a first come, first served basis.
The Teen Advisory Board will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17th. This board consists of middle and high school age students who help plan programs for teens and tweens and more! All are welcome. At 6:30 p.m. all teens and tweens are invited to Teen Game Night. Come play interactive games on the Wii and Xbox 360. Bring a friend!
