What's Happening at the Elsie Quirk Library

Elsie Quirk Library

Most of us live in Florida for the beautiful weather and balmy breezes.  Where else can you live where the sun shines every single day?  But to live in paradise you have to be prepared for the  threat of tropical storms and hurricanes.  Since many of us are originally from somewhere else, we may not be quite as versed in hurricane preparation, and history.  The library is a great place to get the information you need.

We offer many guides you can pick up and take home with you to keep for free:  the “Hurricane Guide”, “All Hazard Guide,” and the “Disaster Preparedness Guide for Elders.”   From home you can find preparedness information on the Sarasota County website at http://www.scgov.net/EmergencyServices/allhazards.asp.  On this website you can find information on Disaster Preparedness Plans, Evacuation Zones, and storm center forecasts.  You can even sign up for Twitter updates from the Sarasota County Emergency Operations Center.  If you are more interested Hurricane history, pick up a free copy of “The Dearborn Street Literary Magazine.”  This month’s issue is entitled “Hurricane: the Price of Paradise”  and includes articles from local historian Diana Harris, James Abraham, and Ruth Matsinger.

If you’d like more in depth history and information you can check out any number of materials.  We have disaster preparedness books and  DVDs such as “Disaster Preparedness: How do I?” and “FPL and you: weathering the storm season together” or “The Hurricane Handbook: a practical guide for residents of the hurricane belt.”   We have books on the history of hurricanes in Florida  like “Florida’s Hurricane History” and “Florida Hurricanes and Tropical Storms.”

Maybe you’re more interested in fictional accounts?  Try reading “Acts of Nature” by Jonathon King,  “Stormy Weather” by Carl Hiaasen, or “Tropical Punch” by Tim Dorsey.  The library has everything you need to learn more about the Florida storm season.  So drop by and see us, and be prepared!

Events this week at the library

On Thursday, August 12th kids ages 2 to 5 years old are invited to a Beach Story Time at the pavilion near the playground area at Englewood Beach from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.  Come enjoy stories and a craft.  No registration is required.  From 11 to 12:35 p.m., kids of all ages are invited to a Family Film at the Elsie Quirk Library.  The film takes place in the Florida Keys and tells the story of a teenage boy who becomes best friends with a feisty dolphin.  The film is rated PG and runs 96 minutes.

The Mac User’s Digital Photo Group will meet in the upstairs meeting room on Friday, August 13th at 2:00 p.m.

Kids won’t want to miss “Art with Carolyn” on Saturday, August 14th at 10:30 a.m.  Using basic art techniques, children will learn to draw a variety of sea life and then create a “Sea Life Sidewalk Chalk Art” on the library sidewalk.  This program is limited to 15 children, and registration is required.  Please call the Sarasota County Call Center at 861-5000 to register, or stop by the Youth Department.  The Suncoast Writer’s Guild (Long Writers Group) will meet in the upstairs meeting room  at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The Master Gardeners from the Cooperative Extension Service will be available to answer your Florida gardening and landscaping questions on Tuesday, August 17th from 10 a.m. to noon.  Soil and irrigation water testing are also available for a small fee.  This is a wonderful way to get your perplexing questions answered by an expert, for free!  So come visit them in our upstairs conference room.

For more information on library programs, resources or services, stop by and visit us or call the Sarasota County Call Center at 861-5000.

Automated Check-In at Elsie Quirk

Elsie Quirk Library

elsie-quirk-book-checkinElsie Quirk Library is now home to Sarasota County Libraries first automated check in system!  Conveyor belts carry the books to a machine that checks them in and then sorts the books.  An individual staff member or volunteer is no longer required to check in each individual item! The system provides for less staff time performing repetitive motion activities and more time for them to provide direct customer service to library users.  It's also a really cool machine to watch work.  We have a new return book drop in the library entrance vestibule where you can drop of your returns.  The exterior night book drop in the wall of the building should also be working in the very near future.  So if you haven't visited us in a while, stop in and check out our more efficient use of space and staff!
